John of God is a full-trance medium. For many of us in North America, mediumship is an unfamiliar concept. In Brazil, the philosophies of Spiritism, based on the writings of the French intellectual Allen Kardec, has permeated the culture. Demographics show that 80-90% of the country is Catholic, however, it is estimated that 20% of the population attend Spiritist activities.

Spiritism is a Christian-based belief system which includes a belief in reincarnation, that spirits or entities exist before and after their experiences on earth and that humans can communicate with these entities.
Mediums are people who have developed the ability to communicate with these entities and it is believed that all humans have this ability, it is simply more developed in certain individuals.
John of God, as a full trance medium, has the ability to fully incorporate the spirit Entity into his body so after his trances, he has no recollection of the work performed through him nor has knowledge of what spirit Entity performed the healing work.
Medium Joao serves as a channel for over 30 spirit Entities that are the spirits of deceased doctors, surgeons, masters and saints. One of the principal Entities is St. Ignatius of Loyala for whom the Casa is named.
St. Ignatius was born in 1491 in Spain, founded the Jesuit Order and faced many hardships and persecutions during the Spanish Inquisition
One of the more frequent entities of the Casa is Dr. Augusto de Almeida, a surgeon and spiritual master with an authoritative manner and unconditional compassion and love for those before him.
Another frequent entity is Dr. Oswaldo Cruz, who was a famous doctor in Brazil over a 100 years ago who helped to eradicate yellow fever. Dr. Cruz emanates loving kindness and is very active in performing spiritual surgeries.
